"Vision Kirchenmusik" is a project driven by the Ev.-luth. Landeskirche Hannover organising events and concerts using contemporary approaches as well as innovative ways in music communication. This year Vision Kirchenmusik organised the performance of the St. Luke Passion by Krzystof Penderecki in Emden.
Krzystof Penderecki is a Polish composer and conductor (*1933). The St. Luke Passion ("Passio et mors Domini nostri Jesu Christi secundum Lucam") belongs to his best known works. It is written in an avant-guarde musical language.
The concert advertisement was designed as a guided walk through the inner city. The walk included serveral light art installations partly combined with sound installations in the public area. The installations should reflect the music of Penderecki and provide a new experience of his work.
Additionally, content was provided online for smart phones (accessible by CR codes) found at certain spots of the guided walk. The audio content was supposed to be consumend using headphones. In particular audio extracts of the St. Luke Passion were presented.
The use of headphones enables the application of virtual acoustics. Binaural sysnthesis was used for the rendering of virtual sources providing the stereo content of an concert recording as well as specificly tailored reverberation sources for better envelopment. The spatial positioning was accomplished using Higher Order Ambisonics.
For a natural perception of the reverb added the reverb tail and the positioning need careful treatment. In this contribution we report on technical and creative aspects in the context of this specific binaural concert advertisement.
